How to Move a Dog or Cat From EU to USA: 2026 Guide

A short overview of what an EU → USA pet move can involve — enough to see why “just follow the U.S. rules” quickly stops being the whole story.

EU → USA can look like one of the easier international pet routes.

For many dogs with a qualifying recent travel history, the U.S. federal pathway can indeed be relatively straightforward.

But “EU → USA” still combines species-specific federal rules, the animal's recent history, the destination State, the exporting EU country's procedures and airline requirements.

The trap: solving CDC does not mean you've solved the entire relocation.

Dogs and Cats Need Different Research

Dogs fall under CDC's dog-import framework, which considers where the dog has been during the previous six months.

Cats should not simply be pushed through the same process.

The United States Has Two Regulatory Layers

Federal entry is one layer. The State or Territory where the animal is actually moving can have additional animal-health requirements.

So “the USA allows my pet in” can still be an incomplete answer.

And “EU” Isn't One Export Authority

The departure side depends on the Member State from which the animal is actually leaving. Then the airline adds its own transport and documentation requirements.

None of these layers is necessarily terrifying alone. The work is identifying which ones apply and making all of them describe the same animal and itinerary.
