Moving a dog or cat from the United States to Japan is a long-lead-time relocation where chronology matters.
For pets coming from most of the continental United States, Japan's framework can involve microchip identification, rabies preparation, antibody testing, government certification, advance coordination with Animal Quarantine Service (AQS) and arrival inspection.
The number to understand: Japan's non-designated-region pathway includes a 180-day waiting period connected to the rabies antibody-testing process. Booking a flight first and trying to fit the rules around it can leave you with a travel date your pet cannot use.
Japan Cares About the History, Not Just the Final Result
Having a microchip, current rabies vaccine and successful antibody result does not by itself explain whether the complete preparation qualifies.
The relationship between identification, vaccination, testing and timing matters. An error made near the beginning may only become obvious months later when the file is reviewed.
AQS Is Part of the Move Before Arrival
Japan requires advance coordination with AQS and official documentation from the exporting country. The pet is then subject to import inspection on arrival.
If the requirements or certification do not line up, Japan can impose detention rather than simply treating the missing item as ordinary paperwork.
Transport Adds Another System
Your government documentation can be correct while your airline arrangement is not. Carrier requirements, crates, routing and transit therefore need to fit the regulatory plan as well.
Knowing that Japan requires rabies preparation, a blood test and a long wait is the easy part. Building the chronology that proves all of it happened correctly is the actual project.
